Task:
In groups, students will examine a specific tribe or city state in and surrounding the Ancient Near East as they began to emerge and solidify into a civilization. Students will create a presentation and various activities (alike to "The Amazing Race") based on major accomplishments and key influences of that area and the impact that it had on life in the Near East as well as on the development and sustainment of a civilization in the ancient world. Next, through "Slamfest", a determination will be made regarding which city state "really mattered" and which factors were the most significant contributors to the development and sustainability of a civilization in the ancient world. Finally, students will create a 3D artifact relating to their city state and participate in an archaeological excavation.

Stage 2: Research/GAPPS & SUMMARY SHEET
Criteria of research:
- Quality research: historically accurate content and detailed research at a senior academic level
- Quality of Sources: research includes sources that are credible and reputable. These are cited in proper MLA format.
- Focus on Theme / Relevance: research showcases the major accomplishments, advancements and legacies related to the area of focus. There is thoughtful analysis that proves how these were significant contributors to the development, sustainability and potential dominance of the city state/ tribe.
Stage 3: AMAZING RACE (TRAVEL AND CHALLENGE)
Criteria (Presentations: Each city state will be given 30 Minutes)
1. Movie (SGA): Groups will create an SGA on your city state that "takes the teams to your city state" (imagine the teams have 'arrived' in your city state and are learning all about the values, culture and history. The SGA should give an overview of the main elements and merits that contributed to the development and dominance / influence of your city state (5 min). You must include the at least six of the areas of focus.
2. 3-D Artifact: Each person will recreate one 3-D artifact that is reflective of his / her 'area of focus' and present / explain its relevance (ie. religion in Sumer). It is important to show the original or you 'muse' or inspiration for your artifact. The artifact must be hand constructed and painted (class time will be given). NOTE: these artifact could be included in the SGA if warranted.
3. Big 3: In a GAPPS presenation (to be presented and shared with the class): What are the three biggest legacies to your city state and how do these portray your dominance in the Near East? (should include visuals, photos and analysis)
4. Team Challenge: each group must create and run a challenge that all other teams (city states) will complete and compete against each other that relates to the history of the city state. It is imperative that you include elements to the challenge that are UNIQUE to your region and that test the competitors about aspects of the city state that you presented).
Day 3 (Slamfest)
1. Slamfest: Groups will create lyrics (from a song from popular culture) and perform their song that:
a) Praises your own city state / tribe (focus on your major contributions / accomplishments / innovations) that showcases your dominance/ legacies.
b) Slams all the other city states (focus on other city states' blunders, failures, weaknesses or inferior qualities)
c) Effectively uses props / costumes to enhance the song / performance
d) Is creative, well rehearsed, choreographed and enthusiastic.
At the end, a poll will be taken to determine which city state was the most dominant and which factors were the most significant contributors to the development and sustainability of a civilization in the ancient world.
