Our law class has been selected to go on a student exchange trip to Australia. On route the plane encounters an engine failure at 50,000’ and is forced to make a crash landing into the Indian Ocean. Luckily, all members of your law class including your teacher Mr. MacDonald survive the crash; the plane sinks into a deep-sea cavern, so there is no hope that radio signals will be able to broadcast the crash location. You manage to reach a deserted tropical island, which appears to have the resources necessary for your survival. Because the island is located in a remote part of the ocean, there is not likely to be rescue for many months. The following items have washed ashore:

Before laws were written down they were shared via word of mouth. What would have been some of the problems with this method?
Society slowly became more complex, therefore, the laws became more difficult to understand. The need to have the laws codified or written down became apparent. Case Study: Quebec's End of Life Legislation
Federal physician-assisted death On March 27, 2014, Steven Fletcher (MP for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia) tabled legislation that: 1) amends the Criminal Code to allow physicians to assist individuals to end their life where the individual meets a set of criteria and the physician follows a set of procedural safeguards; and 2) establishes the Canadian Commission on Physician-Assisted Death to “produce public information on physician-assisted death and to support law and policy reform with respect to physician-assisted death.”
On December 2, 2014, Senators Nancy Ruth and Larry Campbell introduced legislation into the Canadian Senate to amend the Criminal Code to allow physicians to assist individuals to end their life where the individual meets a set of criteria and the physician follows a set of procedural safeguards.
Quebec medical aid-in-dying On June 5, 2014, the Quebec National Assembly passed “An Act respecting end of life care” (Bill 52) – legislation that specifies rights with respect to end-of-life care and regulates “continuous palliative sedation” and “medical aid in dying”. Click here for the full text of the legislation. Bill 52 was introduced on June 12, 2013 and went through consideration by the Health and Social Services Committee of the Quebec National Assembly.
